A&S Graduate Confronts Diabetes in Appalachia

Growing up in Hazard, Kentucky, Brittany Martin was familiar with diabetes. Many of her older relatives had been diagnosed with the chronic condition, and her younger family members were starting to develop it as well. In a state with one of the highest rates of diabetes — 11.3 percent of adults had a diagnosis in 2014 —Martin’s family wasn’t out of the ordinary, but she found the status quo unacceptable.

Pioneering Geneticist Michael Young Delivering Thomas Hunt Morgan Lectures

Michael W. Young, an esteemed geneticist known best for identifying the genes that regulate circadian rhythms, will deliver two lectures at the University of Kentucky this week as part of the 2015 Thomas Hunt Morgan Lecture Series sponsored by the UK Department of Biology.

 

Topping Off the Academic Science Building

 

 

Arts & Sciences Dean Mark Lawrence Kornbluh speaks at the Topping Off Ceremony for the new Academic Science Building. The ceremony signifies the end of the structural phase and the beginning of the remaining phases of the construction process. The Academic Science Building is scheduled to open Fall 2016.

Department of Biology Chair Vincent Cassone and Department of Chemistry Chair Mark Meier recently visited the Academic Science Building construction site to discuss the ways in which the building will transform science education on campus. The Academic Science Building is scheduled to open Fall 2016.

 

 

FastTrack, FOCUS Programs Position Students Ahead of the Success Curve

UK Places 84 Student-athletes on SEC Academic Honor Roll

Student-athletes from all eight of Kentucky's spring sports teams combined to earn a total of 84 spots on the Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, Commissioner Greg Sankey announced on Tuesday.
