Electrochromic materials (those that change color upon oxidation or reduction) have a wide range of applications including color-changing “smart glass,” glare-reducing rearview mirrors, and multicolored displays. This talk will focus on polymer-based electrochromic materials, starting from simple monomer units and moving to more complex structures, and will explore how the initial and resulting colors can be changed by the inclusion of various substituents or by introducing both donor and acceptor character into the polymer backbone.
