ChemCats is a branch of a national organization for students of any major interested in chemistry. By joining ChemCats, you are associating yourself with the American Chemical Society (ACS), the largest scientific society in the world and one of the oldest professional societies in the United States.
ChemCats can provide you with many opportunities to serve your community, to engage socially with other people interested in chemistry, and to learn about the amazing research projects professors are working on right here at UK. We encourage all students to join and all majors are welcome!

Chemistry is the foundation of all biological systems and serves to put the processes of life into context. As someone who wants to pursue a career in pharmacological research, understanding chemistry in depth is important to understand drugs mechanisms and their biochemical effects. In essence, medicine and pharmacology are deeply rooted in chemistry, which provides the principles and methods that drive both fields forward. |

Vice-President Carter Pryor Classification: Senior Major: Chemistry Minor: Mathematics Why Chemistry? I've always had an interest in science, but as soon as I had a taste of chemistry, I knew I wanted to pursue a life learning all it has to offer. If physics is the study of everything, and biology is the study of life, then chemistry is the study of matter, of the world we can see and interact with. It investigates and describes the world around us and has served us since the dawn of human civilization. Why are wood flames orange, but gas flames blue? Why does boiling beer yield alcohol of higher purity? Why can different salt solutions in contact cause a current to flow when a wire is placed between them? What makes incandescent, fluorescent, and LED bulbs different? Chemistry answers all of these questions. I love chemistry because it explains the "Whys" of the everyday. |

Peyton McCubbin Classification: Junior Major: Chemistry Why Chemistry? Chemistry is such a vast and interesting field that opens so many doors! Being a chemistry major has allowed me to learn a variety of chemistry disciplines and meet so many people! I have wanted to be a scientist my entire life, but as a got older I realized that being a chemist would allow me to be the most versatile. Now, as a junior, I only find myself more invested in chemistry with every new thing that I learn. Being involved in chemistry research has allowed me to further this learning as well. I intend to pursue a career as a chemist in the future, hopefully in industry! I have such a passion for chemistry and I can't wait to learn even more! |
