Abstract

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are promising candidates for stationary energy storage applications due to their decoupled energy and power, long service life, and simple manufacturing. Despite to the advantages of redox flow batteries, worldwide market penetration is mainly prevented by techno-economic drawbacks. Transition from commercially available aqueous-based vanadium RFBs to non-aqueous systems would provide an opportunity to enhance the energy density by raising the cell voltage by 2-3 fold. The designing stable electroactive organic compounds without compromising high solubility (charged and neutral states), and higher oxidation potential (for electron donors) is crucial for the development of high capacity posolytes.
